te reo Māori
-
Yes.
We currently use a free version of Weglot.
Our own te reo is pretty scratchy, but I suspect the translation is far form perfect.
Let us know if you spot something that is a complete howler. -
Because te reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand.
Kiwis of Māori descent speak English to the same level of fluency as other Kiwis.
Many Māori don’t speak te reo at all, or as much as they might wish. Many non-Māori speak it passably well enough to make conversation.
So the reality is making the website available in te reo Māori isn’t about improving its ‘understandability’ to people who speak Māori. Its just about respecting the fact that it is an official language of New Zealand.
Some Kiwis get irked by this. Our tip is just to choose the English version.
